On November 25th, GES2019 Future Education Conference opened in Beijing. More than two hundred domestic and foreign guests gathered together to explore the future world and the direction of education development through interdisciplinary dialogue and thought collision. Bai Yunfeng, co-founder and president of TAL Education Group, attended the conference and delivered a keynote speech on "Gathering Top Talent from Around the World to Achieve the Great Dream of Education".
Core viewpoints:
In the classrooms of Xueersi, "inspiring interest, cultivating habits, and shaping character" have become the educational philosophy implemented by every teacher in every classroom. We hope to cultivate the lifelong abilities of children. Sometimes, a good lesson can change a child's life.
The internet has given high-quality education wings, transcending mountains and rivers to promote educational equity.
Through digitized collection, TAL Education Group collects information before, during, and after class to form a digital portrait of the student. Once education is equipped with technology, it will make large-scale personalized teaching possible.
As for the future-oriented education, we have reason to firmly believe that technology is the core support, talent is the core driving force, but the ultimate goal of education remains unchanged.
Below is the live transcript:
Hello everyone! I am very happy to be back on the stage of the GES Future Education Conference and discuss education topics with elites from various countries and sectors. The essence of education is to cultivate people, and I want to start from there.
Fifteen years ago - the addition of excellent education talents
Around fifteen years ago, I clearly remember, not long after Happigo was established, I went to Peking University to recruit.
We printed 350 recruitment brochures, but only sent out 72, and 15 people came. Interestingly, at the same time as the job fair, the campus was crowded with students from a neighboring real estate company, and there weren't enough seats, so some of them even came to our classroom to borrow chairs.
We reflected on why the best graduate students were unwilling to enter the education industry?
Some might think "salary," but in fact, the compensation we offered was not lower than other companies. It was actually the philosophy. In the eyes of the people at that time, the education industry equaled public schools. The most outstanding students in the country did not see what value the education industry could create for this era.
We were thinking, is being a good teacher just about dealing with exams?
This reminded me of a real story that happened around me. In the Xueersi classroom, there was a student who always kept her head down in class, didn't say a word when asked, but had perfect homework scores. The teacher thought she was shy, and asked her to communicate privately after class, only to find that all her homework was copied. The student then spoke the truth: "I don't know the answers to the questions the teacher asks. I dare not raise my hand, but I'm afraid of being looked down upon by everyone. I thought if I did all my homework correctly, no one would look down on me... " After the teacher heard this, she felt very guilty. Instead of scolding the child, she squatted down and said to the child, "I'm sorry, the teacher didn't know you didn't know. In the the future, when I ask questions in class, if you know it, raise your left hand, if you don't, raise your right hand, so the teacher knows whether to test you, and your classmates won't make fun of you, okay?"
In this way, there was an unspoken agreement between the child and the teacher. Slowly, the number of times the child raised her hand to answer questions in class increased, and her sense of achievement and learning effectiveness also improved.
This teacher's name is Chen Dongmei, she is an ordinary member of the Xueersi teachers.
In the Xueersi classroom, "inspiring interest, cultivating habits, and shaping character" has become the educational philosophy implemented by every teacher in every classroom. We hope to cultivate the lifelong abilities of children.
Later, more and more college students learned about what we were doing and were willing to join TAL Education Group and the basic education industry. Some of them work in frontline teaching, and some work in curriculum development. They found that through their dedication and hard work, they could truly bring about growth and change for children. In this process, they felt their own value.
Sometimes, a good lesson can change a child's life. Choosing to be a teacher is the happiest thing in my life.
Ten years ago - education began to grow wings of technology
The second story I want to share is about persistence. In 2009, TAL Education Group began to explore the future of internet education.
At that time, the MOOC was just emerging in the United States, and we were considering whether the MOOC model could be used in the field of basic education. But unfortunately, the crowd facing basic education was completely different from that of the MOOC, and directly copying the MOOC route was not viable. After several trials, TAL Education Group became the first in the industry to launch an internet-based double-teacher model, expanding the supply of quality resources while maximizing teaching experience and effectiveness.
Foping County in Shaanxi Province is a small county built in a mountainous area with only 30,000 people. Last March, our public welfare team donated double-teacher classrooms to Foping Middle School, with teachers from Xi'an as the main lecturers and local teachers as tutors, and the effect has been very good. Local officials told us a true story, that a local child had a good junior high school performance, but the family felt that the local education was lagging behind, and sent him to high school in Xi'an with the whole family's efforts. However, he became lost after leaving his parents, attended Internet cafes during class hours, and his grades plummeted, so he had to return to Foping. But after the double-teacher classroom launched, they could enjoy high-quality educational resources at their doorstep. Later, they told me that more than ten years later, another child from the area was admitted to Peking University. This is the power of the internet plus education.
Zhaoyue County in Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province, has the largest population of the Yi ethnic group in the country and is also a national-level impoverished county. Communication difficulties between the locals and the outside world have affected local development, and many children do not speak Mandarin even after attending elementary school, and many local teachers do not speak Mandarin. The engineers at Xueersi Online School developed an "AI teacher Mandarin teaching system" to help children learn Mandarin.
There is a very outstanding engineer who came out from a large internet company and participated in this project. When he saw the video of these Yi children using the system he helped develop to study Mandarin, the 1.8-meter tall man burst into tears. Later, he said that seeing his products truly help children in the mountains change their fate, was a story he could brag about to his grandchildren when he gets old.
After 9 years of persistence, we have taken numerous detours, making the double-teacher online model the standard for solving distance education solutions in the industry. Today, the number of students in TAL Education Group's online learning has exceeded that of offline, distributed in 365 cities in China and 24 countries and regions worldwide.
The internet gave high-quality education wings, crossing mountains and rivers to promote educational equity.
Three years ago - the era of AI brings new changes to education
Two or three years ago, the technology team of TAL Education Group went to Harvard University to exchange and learn, and also hoped to attract more outstanding algorithm engineers. However, the professors and students at Harvard did not understand why an education company needed algorithm engineers? So, we showed them a video.
It looks like a very ordinary double-teacher class, but in fact, this is the AI teacher. From asking questions and taking attendance, to interactive responses, and providing encouragement, this series of interactions was completed by the AI system. "Amazing!" This was the first reaction of Harvard teachers and students after learning the truth. Everyone witnessed the infinite possibilities burst forth when AI was combined with the education scene.
We have a digital portrait of Chinese students, which not only records the student's academic performance and learning abilities but also records their social practices, physical literacy, and personal strengths.
How was this digital portrait generated?
In 2014, the Ministry of Education issued the "China Student Development Core Literacy", mainly including the five dimensions of "morality, intelligence, physical, beauty, and labor". If it is digitized and broken down, it will be broken down into 17 secondary indexes, 111 tertiary indexes, and ultimately form a digital map of the student.
Through digital collection, we carry out process collection before, during, and after class to form a complete digital portrait of the student. Once education is equipped with technology, large-scale personalized teaching becomes possible.
As for the future-oriented education, we have reason to firmly believe that technology is the core support, talent is the core driving force, but the ultimate goal of education remains unchanged.
Newton, Maxwell, Einstein... these shining stars once lit up the sky of human history, driving the progress of human civilization. I also look forward to being able to gather more top talents from around the world to jointly achieve the great dream of education!
