Taking Gansu Children on a 'Voyage': Xueersi's Spectrum Action Plan (Public Welfare Initiative) Reaches 16 Schools in Linxia

"I want to build a boat to travel with my parents!" said Ma Xiaowei, a fifth grader at Chengdong Primary School in Guanghe County, Linxia, Gansu, to Chang Limei, a science education researcher from the Chengdu Institute of Education Sciences, on April 17. That day, Ma and his classmates received ship models donated by kind-hearted individuals.

The journalist from Benliu News learned that recently, representatives from Xueersi and the Beijing Guixin Charity Foundation donated and supported 800 copies of nautical science popularization books and 272 ship models to 16 schools in Guanghe County. Two science teachers from Xueersi went deep into many mountainous village primary schools to carry out public welfare science classes. Using ship models as teaching aids, the teachers carefully explained the basic principles and structure of maritime navigation to students, and led the children to dismantle and assemble the model by hand, deepening their understanding of ships through hands-on experience.

"We are working around the theme of maritime navigation, collaborating with some universities and national key laboratories to continue providing scientific reading, scientific exhibition models, online maritime science popularization video viewing, and planning and organizing campus and regional engineering practice competitions, giving children in the central and western regions the opportunity to master scientific knowledge through rich scientific activities, cultivate an interest in scientific learning, and enhance scientific and engineering thinking, and improve their core scientific literacy," explained a teacher from Xueersi. They hope that through this project, they can effectively promote the development of science education in counties and districts in the western region.

Ma Yingfa, the party secretary and director of the Education Bureau of Guanghe County, told the Benliu News reporter that the Spectrum Action Plan (Phase Two) supported by Xueersi and implemented by the Beijing Guixin Charity Foundation was officially launched in Linxia recently. Teachers from the Chengdu Institute of Education Sciences and universities came to Guanghe County specifically to carry out teacher training and donation activities, donating marine models and science popularization books worth 60,000 yuan to 16 primary schools. The students from the 16 project schools will engage in online scientific theme courses, focusing on maritime science, and will start learning the application of engineering knowledge and designing and making "electric boat" models. With "building a small boat" as the driving task, the students' interest in hands-on activities will be stimulated, and they will conduct competitive activities at the class, school, and regional levels to enhance their interest and ability in learning, observing, researching, collaborating, problem-solving, and exploring scientific mysteries.
