People's Daily App: Good Future makes an appearance at the 2019 Beijing Expo, earning praise for their self-developed AI teacher.

On May 28, 2019, the 2019 China International Fair for Trade in Services (referred to as "CIFTIS") officially opened in Beijing. The online school under the banner of TAL Education Group, Xueersi, presented its independently developed "AI Teacher" and other products at the event. Three products including "Smart Board Classroom" and "Future Cloud Platform" under TAL Education Group also participated in the Changping sub-venue of CIFTIS. At the exhibition, the AI Teacher showcased how artificial intelligence can achieve "precision poverty alleviation" in education. As the latest research result of Xueersi, the AI Teacher deeply integrates technologies such as facial expression recognition, speech recognition and evaluation, and OCR handwriting recognition. Xueersi also applied it to educational public welfare, delivering high-quality educational resources to remote and impoverished areas, winning unanimous praise from guests at home and abroad. Xueersi researched and developed AI Teacher to assist in Chinese language learning. At the exhibition that day, Bai Yunfeng, the president of TAL Education Group, introduced the basic situation of the Group and the "Double Teacher Classroom" of the Qinyuanyuan Public Welfare Foundation. Qinyuanyuan Public Welfare Foundation, jointly founded by New Oriental and TAL Education Group in 2017 with an investment of 100 million RMB, is committed to promoting educational fairness through integrating resources and leveraging open educational platforms with technology. In recent years, the country has increased efforts to promote poverty alleviation through education, and Internet+AI has created a new landscape for poverty alleviation in China. "We firmly believe that the integration of technology and education will fundamentally promote the solution to poverty in our country," Bai Yunfeng said. As a technology education company, TAL Education Group has provided effective ways and means to solve education problems in targeted poverty alleviation, in coordination with China's move toward the 2.0 era of digitizing basic education. At the current CIFTIS, the AI Teacher, an artificial intelligence system independently developed by Xueersi, received attention for its outstanding performance in education. The AI Teacher includes AI Language Learning System, AI Teacher One-on-One English, AI Teacher Intelligent Correction, and VR Teaching Experience. Its basic functions include facial expression recognition, speech recognition and evaluation, and OCR image recognition technology. Through these technologies, the AI Teacher can identify students' focus and emotions, and intelligently evaluate and correct pronunciation, handwriting, and semantics. Zhaojue County, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province, is the largest settlement county of Yi Nationality and a key poverty alleviation county in the country. The Yi population accounts for 98.1% of the total population in Zhaojue, with a very low rate of Mandarin fluency. In Liangshan Prefecture, 49% of the 540,000 preschool children cannot speak Mandarin, making Mandarin education one of the most difficult tasks in the region. In response to the call for targeted poverty alleviation in education, Xueersi launched the "AI Teacher Smart Education" basic education project for Zhaojue County in September last year, providing free Mandarin teaching services and high-quality course resources to all students in Zhaojue County. Common vocabulary is presented in a "picture + Yi-Han bilingual pronunciation" mode. During learning, the AI Teacher first displays the picture, then reads in Yi language, clarifies the meaning, reads in Mandarin, and children follow the Mandarin reading. The system can provide real-time assessment and correction of the children's pronunciation, as well as learning in Chinese pinyin, vocabulary, and grammar. "It's like having a teacher who speaks standard Mandarin for the children. "Ms. Xie, who is engaged in health education in Beijing, said after listening to the on-site staff's explanation and experiencing the AI Teacher, if such a product can be widely promoted, learning Mandarin for children in minority areas will become very convenient. Currently, the AI Teacher Language Learning System has been used in 71 schools, 124 teaching points, and nearly 60,000 students in Zhaojue, Liangshan, Sichuan. The dream of Yi children to "learn Mandarin well and walk out of the mountains" has come true. The AI Teacher Language Learning System can also assist foreign friends who need to learn Mandarin. Xueersi has successively developed multi-language teaching functions such as Russian, French, Czech, and others to help friends from countries along the "Belt and Road" learn Mandarin. At the "China-Central and Eastern European Countries Education Cooperation and Exchange Exhibition" held in Croatia in April this year, Aton, a Croatian high school student who had never learned Mandarin, quickly mastered basic Mandarin expressions in just 5 minutes, much to his surprise. At the current CIFTIS, TAL Education Group also presented its "AI+Education" new products such as "WISROOM Xueersi Smart Classroom Solution," "Xueersi AI Teacher," and "Smart Board Classroom," which received high praise from delegates at the recent International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Education jointly held by China and UNESCO. WISROOM is an intelligent classroom solution developed by TAL Education Group that empowers education with AI and provides personalized attention and interaction for each student, supplemented by research achievements in neuroscience. In several regions such as the "Internet+Education" demonstration zone in Ningxia, TAL Education Group uses the WISROOM teaching system to deliver English classes by AI teachers, addressing the problems of a shortage of foreign language teachers and inaccurate pronunciation. Over the past year, TAL Education Group has benefited 14,000 students and 4,000 teachers in 8 poverty-stricken counties in 4 provinces through means such as live dual-teacher broadcasts and AI teachers. Not only can children in remote areas enjoy high-quality educational resources and services like those in major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, but their teachers can also receive remote teaching and research guidance, fundamentally solving the problem of unequal educational resources. In 2018, TAL Education Group collaborated with the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission to conduct pilot projects at Xintiandi Elementary School Center in Luwan, Shanghai. Based on data, the "Smart Board Classroom" tool can not only understand what students have mastered and how well they have mastered it in real time, but also identify students' abilities and disadvantages, helping students discover their potential and laying a solid foundation for truly implementing personalized teaching on a large scale. Bai Yunfeng expressed that TAL Education Group hopes to use scientific and technological means to provide large-scale, low-cost, and high-quality teaching services, truly promoting educational fairness and facilitating benefits for more people. At the CIFTIS, Xueersi's inclusive synchronous learning interactive course brand "Xueersi Light Course" signed a cooperation agreement with Baidu's conversational AI operating system "XiaoDu Assistant." In the future, the two parties will collaborate on technologies and business levels such as semantic understanding, multi-round voice interaction, children's voiceprint recognition, and image recognition. In addition to Xueersi Online School and the Qinyuanyuan Public Welfare Foundation's participation in the CIFTIS, TAL Education Group's Smart Education also showcased three products at the Changping sub-venue of the CIFTIS: "Smart Board Classroom" that assists in precise teaching through behavioral analysis, "AI Teacher" that supports high-quality teacher resources, and "Future Cloud Platform" that drives personalized learning through data. Bai Yunfeng stated that the rational application of advanced technologies such as AI, the Internet, and big data not only helps in realizing inclusive education and promoting the balanced development of education, but will also propel educational reform and connect China's education with the world and the future. "Under the new era background of 'AI+,' TAL Education Group hopes to explore and use educational technology such as artificial intelligence and big data to play a positive role in enabling fair and quality education to more people," Bai Yunfeng said. Driven by its mission to "use technology to promote educational progress," TAL Education Group will further explore future educational models such as "AI+Education" to address the long-standing contradiction between "scale" and "personalization," and advance modern and balanced education.
